One Roll of Film in San Francisco
A very short blog showcasing some highlights from a roll of Cinestill BWXX that I shot in San Francisco, CA.
Back in early March, I had the opportunity to travel to beautiful San Francisco, CA. Unfortunately when I landed, I was met with grey skies and a chilly breeze -- not the sunshine & warmth I was hoping for. Regardless, I made the most of my short 2-day trip, by getting out one morning and going for a photo walk. I shot these all with my Nikon F3, my Voigtlander 40mm F2, and a roll of Cinestill BWXX.
Here are some highlights, I hope you enjoy.
Warm up shot, as always. Enjoyed the repeating pattern framed by the trees.
Given the lack of light & color, mainly looking for compelling shapes & frames. Also, I spy a little bird in center frame.
Pretty happy with the symmetry of this one and the subtle detail of the lights still being on.
Simple look back shot, but really like the texture and scale here.
Typically I'd consider this boring, but I think the massive amount of negative space makes me feel a certain way, and there is a subtle balance with the hill on the left & clouds on the right.
Long line for the ferry that day.
Happy accident on this one. Had no idea those statues were there, was more intrigued by the quaint apartments backdropped by the sky scrapers. Turned out to be quite the layered piece. Really happy with how this one turned out.
Wish that I shot this a split second earlier to not get the person in the bottom right, but oh well.
Really liked the natural framing, angle, and light on this one.
In love with the texture that I got from this shot. Just so many nice layers & grittiness to it.
I was most excited to get this shot back. I was walking back to my hotel room & poked my head out the fire escape and noticed this person hanging their laundry. I just thought it was such an interesting scene -- only wish would be for a slightly longer lens.
And that's a wrap! That was my first time shooting BWXX, and I'm super pleased. It has really nice texture and contrast. I'll definitely be picking up another few rolls of this for any B&W work I plan to shoot.
